RELEASE: The Anti-Fraud Coalition Statement on New Department of Justice Corporate Crime Whistleblower Tip Program
Washington, DC – Today, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco announced a new Justice Department whistleblower rewards program to award those who deliver tips about corporate fraud and other white-collar crime.
“The launch of this DOJ-run whistleblower rewards program is fantastic news,” said Jacklyn DeMar, TAF Coalition President & CEO. “This new program will fill gaps in enforcement, and help unlock the full potential of whistleblowers to detect and defer fraud.”
This new program models the extremely successful SEC Whistleblower Program, established in 2010 as part of the Dodd-Frank financial reform law. Since its launch, whistleblowers have helped the SEC recover more than $6 billion. “We hope the new DOJ whistleblower program can spur the same sorts of results we’ve seen at the SEC and CFTC and look forward to learning more details,” said DeMar.
“The premise is simple: if an individual helps DOJ discover significant corporate or financial misconduct — otherwise unknown to us — then the individual could qualify to receive a portion of the resulting forfeiture,” said Monaco. “With these announcements, our message to whistleblowers is clear: the Department of Justice wants to hear from you. And to those considering a voluntary self-disclosure, our message is equally clear: knock on our door before we knock on yours.”
