WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, it was revealed that President Biden’s “American Families Plan” legislation sends $80 billion to the IRS to fund increased audits. The Biden Administration maintains that increased audits of the wealthiest Americans should generate $700 billion in net taxes that would otherwise go uncollected over the next ten years.

In response, Taxpayers Against Fraud Education Fund President & CEO Jeb White released the following statement:

We applaud increased enforcement against tax evaders. However, complex tax fraud schemes are not uncovered by auditors. Whistleblowers are required to unravel these frauds. Our government has leveraged the assistance of whistleblowers to fight all kinds of fraud on the government and the financial markets. However, when it comes to tax fraud, the IRS has failed to fully utilize the help of whistleblowers. Instead of throwing money at audits, the IRS should beef up its whistleblower program.

The Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006 created an IRS Whistleblower Program that incentivized private individuals to assist the IRS in rooting out tax fraud. However, this program has never fully realized its potential.
