A federal judge has ordered Dallas-based Trinity Industries to pay $683 million in a whistleblower case that accused the company of defrauding the U.S. government. Single damages were pegged at $175 million and tripled to $525 million by a jury. The judge also hit the company with over 16,000 violations at $8,250 each, for an additional total of $138.4 million. In addition, the judge ordered the company to pay nearly $20 million to cover whistleblower Joshua Harman’s legal expenses.
