After a seven-year battle, pharmaceutical manufacturers AstraZeneca, Cephalon, and Biogen Idec have agreed to pay $55.5 million to settle a whistleblower-initiated False Claims Act case.
February was a busy month for the False Claims Act. More than 15 settlements were announced, netting approximately $238 million. To date, recoveries now exceed $1 Billion in FY2015!
The State of Texas has intervened in a lawsuit against AstraZeneca for illegally promoting off-label uses of the drugs Seroquel and Seroquel XR. AstraZeneca has already been hit twice for off-label promotion of these drugs. In April 2010, the pharmaceutical company paid $520 million to settle allegation of off-label marketing of the drugs and in March 2011, paid $68.5 million to settle similar allegations.
